Taylor Swift has got the world on their toes yet again with her announcement of her next album on October 21, 2022: Midnights, yet to be released.
Taylor Swift is not only a talented singer and songwriter, but a well-thought out marketer. Swift has always been known for “reinventing herself” and fully embodying distinct aesthetics. Her albums in the past include Reputation, a more “edgy” aesthetic, as well as Lover, which, on the other hand, gives out a more happy, bright feeling. Taylor Swift is well-known for the way she advertises her music leading up to its release, and since her announcement of Midnights, fans have been posting about their own theories and stories of what they perceive about the meaning behind Swift’s posts.
@Moonybug on TikTok, a Taylor Swift superfan, was interviewed on her opinion of what Swift’s promotion so far could predict about the album release. What is currently known of Midnights is that it exudes a particularly mystical, dreamy, and disco feel. This was inferred from Swift’s posts on the album’s tracks on her TikTok and Instagram Reels, as they showed titles such as “Lavender Haze.” Furthermore, in Taylor Swift’s recent public appearances, she has been dressed up in glam, filled with jewels and sparkles—which happens to be aligned to the new song coming out, called “Bejeweled.”
However, one of her posts showcases her in a room, clearly distressed. @Moonybug speculates that the album could be about identity: how someone may be so happy and elegant on the outside but breaking on the inside. There is also online speculation that Midnights would be Reputation part 2. Although Swift has said that Midnights will incorporate bits of the themes of all previous eras, Reputation has been her most vulnerable one, and the titles of the tracks that have been released so far seem to relate a wide audience.
Based on the known track titles, some fans believe that she has taken some inspiration from Marvel. Her released track titles included “Anti-Hero,” “Karma” and “Mastermind.” When listening to the tracks and their titles, she also incorporates the recurring theme of what it means to be a “superhero” in comparison to being human and vulnerable.
